The leftover remains of a chicken leg, still etched with teeth marks from an ancient dinner thousands of years ago, provides some of the oldest evidence for the introduction of domesticated chickens to the continent of Africa. Recent research from Washington University in St. Louis has confirmed that based on radiocarbon dating of 30 chicken bones from a farming village in present day Ethiopia, the first domestic chicken crossed ancient roads and even seas! The main ancestor of todays chicken came from Asia and parts of India. The routes in which chickens came to Africa is astonishing and can provide insight into how chickens further evolved into what we know them as today.
